Two letters, one country
Country-code endings adopted by people with no connection to the country. Short, recognisable, and administered by a national body rather than a commercial registry.
Every two-letter ending belongs to a territory. A handful of them happen to spell something useful in English — .io reads as input/output, .sh as the shell, .tv as television, .me as a pronoun — and those have been sold worldwide for decades to people who will never set foot in the British Indian Ocean Territory, Saint Helena, Tuvalu or Montenegro.
That trade is usually fine and occasionally not. A ccTLD's long-term administration is a political question rather than purely a commercial one: policy is set by a national authority, and the authority can change. It is worth choosing one deliberately rather than by accident.
Most of the endings below are unrestricted for foreign registrants. A few are not, and the individual pages say so.
