Endings for things that run

Software, APIs, data and infrastructure. Two of them enforce HTTPS at the browser before a packet is sent.

This is the densest, most contested part of the catalog, because it is where developers have been naming things since the generic endings opened. It is also where the only real technical differences between endings live.

A small number of endings are on the HSTS preload list, which means browsers refuse plain HTTP across the entire ending before any connection is attempted. That is not a marketing claim; it is a property compiled into the browser. If a downgrade attack is in your threat model it is the one property here worth paying for.

Two others share their name with a file extension, which has drawn real criticism — a chat client will happily turn the text of a filename into a link.

Every name gets full DNS here, free: A, AAAA, CNAME, TXT, MX, NS, SRV and CAA with per-record TTLs. DNSSEC availability varies by registry and is listed per ending.
